MailerLite review (2026): is it the right email tool for your South African store?

MailerLite is the email platform we recommend to most SA stores starting out — affordable, genuinely easy to use, and with a free tier to get going. Here’s an honest review of what it does well, where it falls short, what it costs in 2026, and who should pick it over Klaviyo.

In our email marketing guide we called email the highest-ROI channel in ecommerce and named MailerLite as the sensible starting point for most SA stores. This is the closer look: a proper review of MailerLite for an online store in 2026 — the strengths, the genuine limitations, the current pricing, and the honest answer to “MailerLite or Klaviyo?”

We set this up for SA stores regularly, so this isn’t a feature-list regurgitation — it’s the practical view of living with it.

What MailerLite is

MailerLite is an email marketing platform: you build a subscriber list, design and send campaigns (newsletters, promotions), and — the part that matters most for ecommerce — set up automated flows triggered by customer behaviour. It connects to Shopify and WooCommerce, so it can react to store events like signups, purchases and abandoned carts. Beyond email it also offers landing pages, signup forms, pop-ups and basic website building, which makes it a fairly complete top-of-funnel toolkit for a small store, not just an email sender.

What it does well

  • It’s genuinely easy to use. This is MailerLite’s headline strength. The drag-and-drop editor, automation builder and overall interface are clean and beginner-friendly. For a store owner who isn’t a marketing specialist — which is most SA store owners — you can build a decent welcome flow or campaign without a steep learning curve.
  • It’s affordable. Pricing is based on subscriber count and all paid plans include unlimited monthly emails. For small and mid-sized lists it’s one of the better-value options around, and you’re not nickel-and-dimed for landing pages, automations or extra features the way some competitors do it.
  • The free tier lets you start. You can begin at no cost while you build your list and learn the tool (more on the current limits below).
  • It bundles more than email. Landing pages, forms, pop-ups and a website builder are included, so a small store can run a lot of its top-of-funnel from one tool.
  • The automations cover the essentials. Welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back — the money-making flows are all buildable.

Where it falls short

  • It gets pricier as your list grows large. MailerLite is excellent value at small-to-mid list sizes, but once you’re into tens of thousands of subscribers it becomes one of the pricier “affordable” options, and that’s the point some stores look at Klaviyo or alternatives.
  • Segmentation isn’t as deep as Klaviyo’s. MailerLite’s segmentation is perfectly capable for most stores, but if you want the granular, behaviour-driven, predictive segmentation that high-volume ecommerce relies on, Klaviyo is more powerful.
  • The free tier got tighter. In September 2025 MailerLite cut the free plan’s subscriber limit from 1,000 to 500, so it’s more of a trial than a long-term home now (see pricing below).
  • Transactional email is separate. MailerLite’s marketing plans don’t include transactional email (order confirmations etc. via API) — that’s a separate product (MailerSend). For a normal Shopify store this rarely matters since Shopify handles order emails, but worth knowing.

MailerLite pricing in 2026

Pricing is based on your subscriber count; all paid plans include unlimited emails, and annual billing gives a discount.

Plan From Key points
Free $0 Up to 500 subscribers, 12,000 emails/mo, limited features
Growing Business ~$10/mo Unlimited emails, templates, no MailerLite branding
Advanced ~$20/mo Pop-ups, more automation triggers, custom HTML, AI assistant
Enterprise Custom For very large lists (100K+)

Pricing scales with subscriber count and changes over time — check mailerlite.com for current rates. As an international tool it’s billed in USD, so factor the exchange rate into your rand budget. The practical read: the free plan is now a trial, and most committed SA stores should plan to start on Growing Business at around $10/month.

MailerLite vs Klaviyo: the honest call

This is the decision most SA stores actually face. The short version: start with MailerLite unless you already know you need Klaviyo’s power.

MailerLite wins on simplicity and price — it’s easier to learn and cheaper at small-to-mid list sizes, and it does everything a growing store needs. Klaviyo wins on depth — richer ecommerce-specific automation, far more granular segmentation, and deeper analytics — at a higher price that climbs with your list. The mistake is paying for Klaviyo’s sophistication before you’re using MailerLite’s. For a store under, say, tens of thousands of subscribers that wants the five core money-making flows running well, MailerLite is the smart, economical choice. Move to Klaviyo when advanced segmentation and automation will demonstrably earn back the higher cost — not before. And switching later is entirely doable.

Who MailerLite is best for

  • SA stores starting or scaling email who want a capable tool without a steep learning curve or a big bill.
  • Owner-operators who’ll be building the emails themselves and value an interface that doesn’t fight them.
  • Small-to-mid lists where MailerLite’s pricing is at its most competitive.
  • Stores wanting an all-in-one top-of-funnel — email plus landing pages, forms and pop-ups in one place.

It’s a weaker fit for very large, data-heavy operations that need Klaviyo-grade segmentation, or stores already deep in a different ecosystem. You’ll find MailerLite among our recommended resources.

Frequently asked questions

Is MailerLite good for a Shopify store?
Yes, for most small-to-mid SA Shopify stores it’s an excellent choice — it integrates with Shopify, is genuinely easy to use, and supports the core ecommerce flows (welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back) at affordable pricing. It’s particularly well-suited to owner-operators building their own emails. Larger, data-heavy stores that need very granular, predictive segmentation may eventually prefer Klaviyo, but MailerLite is the sensible starting point and handles the essentials that drive most email revenue.
Is MailerLite really free?
It has a free plan, but as of September 2025 the limit was cut from 1,000 to 500 subscribers (with 12,000 emails/month and limited features). That makes the free tier more of a trial than a long-term home — you’re one good lead magnet away from outgrowing it. Most committed stores should plan to move to the Growing Business plan (from around $10/month), which unlocks unlimited emails, templates and removes MailerLite branding. The free plan is genuinely useful for testing and getting started, though.
MailerLite or Klaviyo for my SA store?
Start with MailerLite unless you already know you need Klaviyo’s advanced features. MailerLite is easier to use and cheaper at small-to-mid list sizes while covering everything a growing store needs. Klaviyo offers deeper segmentation, richer ecommerce automation and better analytics, but at a higher price that scales with your list. Don’t pay for Klaviyo’s power before you’re fully using MailerLite’s — and switching from one to the other later is entirely doable as you grow.
How much does MailerLite cost in South Africa?
MailerLite is priced in USD based on subscriber count, so your rand cost depends on the exchange rate. The free plan covers up to 500 subscribers; the Growing Business plan starts around $10/month (unlimited emails, templates, no branding); Advanced around $20/month (pop-ups, more automation, AI assistant); and Enterprise is custom for very large lists. Annual billing gives a discount. It’s very affordable at smaller list sizes and becomes pricier as your list grows into the tens of thousands — check mailerlite.com for current rates.
Does MailerLite do abandoned cart emails?
Yes — when connected to Shopify or WooCommerce, MailerLite can run automated abandoned cart flows, along with welcome series, post-purchase sequences and win-back campaigns. These automated flows are where most email revenue comes from, and MailerLite’s automation builder handles them well without needing technical skill. The abandoned cart flow in particular is the highest-ROI automation in ecommerce, and MailerLite is perfectly capable of running it — see our abandoned cart recovery playbook for how to structure it.

The verdict

MailerLite earns its reputation as the go-to email tool for stores that want capable email marketing without complexity or a big bill. It’s easy to use, affordable at the list sizes most SA stores operate at, bundles useful extras, and runs all the money-making flows. Its limits — pricing at large scale and segmentation depth versus Klaviyo — only bite once you’re a sizeable, data-driven operation, and by then you’ll know it. For the vast majority of SA stores getting serious about email, MailerLite is the right first choice.

If you’d like your email set up properly on MailerLite — list-building, the core automated flows, and Shopify or WooCommerce integration — that’s exactly the kind of thing we do. Read the email marketing guide for the strategy, then let’s get it running.
